General Care Discussion :: Canister Filter Footprint

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have limited space around my tank, and I would like to get a good filter for it. I just got a XP3 but the footprint for it is 9x9 inches. Is there an option for a good capacity filter that has a smaller footprint than this? What are some of the more filter filter footprints? Also if I were to get an over the tank filter have close to the top of the glass would the water have to come?

As a side note petsmart price matched the XP3 to the website, with a little prodding (an 80 dollar reduction).

the water level depends on the filter you have... the over the tank filters by Tetra (Whisper Power Filters) have adjustable lengths so you can have the water level at different levels only thing is, the further the water is from the top of the tank, the louder the splash it will make...

also the Whisper Filters seemed to have a small opening for filtered objects to get through... so when the turtle sheds some of skin stays on the outside of the filter tube, instead of being sucked completely in... canisters are the way to go if you can afford them and have the space for them..

So no one has any ideas for a filter with a smaller footprint than the XP3? I don't have a hieght problem I just need it to be a couple of inches smaller at the base.

Sorry, I don't know. Could you put the filter underneath the tank?

I've got the fluval 404. I'm not at home so I can't actually measure it, but the dimentions I came up with on the web are 9.5" x 6.5". I think it's taller than the xp3 though, 15" + 2" hoses... It's a slightly smaller footprint, but I don't know what sort of space you're trying to fit it in...

I'll look into this fluval... the size constraint I have is the bas of the XP3 is about 3/4 of an inch too big for the space I want to put it in.

I have no room underneath the tank.... Hopefully someday I will have a larger place for the tank with space underneath.

I'm not sure but the XP2 may have a smaller footprint than the XP3.
