i just got an xp2 for my 55 gallon tank that will be filled 3/4 full.

it didnt come with biological media (stars or rings?? )

i dont really get it. which should i use???

Use both.

You can use either, or a combo. They'll both be doing the same thing

do you have to change then out like you have to with the carbon and white filter pad

No, you never change bio-media. It works by providing a large amount of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize, once you have a nice poulation going you want to hang on to them! All you do is rinse them with tank water (never tap water) and put them back. Also, be sure to keep them wet during filter maintenance, drying out will kill the bacteria.
