where can you get em? i live in jersey, and i think turtle selling is illegal. i went to chinatown in NYC to get a RES, but i want to get a DBT...any idea? should i go to a river? haha

There are some breeders on the internet but I don't think they have any available right now (I was looking too! ). Definitely don't collect any wild specimens as their population is dwindling in the wild.

if there are breeders...how do they ship them? in a regular box? must be a hard trip for the turtles

I'm not sure, but if they do it right, the turtles should be okay. But it must be pretty scary for them.

I've received baby bearded dragons by overnight delivery before. Each one was in a plastic food container with air holes and loose fluffy material to cushion the lizard. That was placed in a small styrofoam box with crumpled newspaper to keep it from shifting around. And that was packed in a cardboard box. The breeder waited until the very last minute to drop them off with the shipper so they didn't have to stay in the box any longer than they had to. I got the animal within 15 hours and each one arrived in excellent shape. But bearded dragons are very resilient creatures and don't get phased very easily. They also tend to just go into a deep sleep when the lights are out.

DBT"s are slowly disappearing in the wild here in NJ. DO NOT under any circumstance take one from the wild. Not only is it a federal (and state) offence but it's a class B felony to possess one without the proper documentation in NJ (your Vet could be also charged for treating and not reporting, although it's rare now, as they are not officially on the threatened species list, at least not yet). If you must have one, check out kingsnake.com or find a reputable breeder/dealer (do your homework) and go from there......

Please dont buy anymore turtles from china town, they keep them in realy inhumane, miserable conditions..those vendors have no hearts and all they care about is making a quick buck. Do you know how many RES die every day because of the way they are kept? Too many..By buying from them, you are adding to the problem.

Personally...I don't believe its wrong to buy from them because regardless if you do, the RES turtles are goign to die anyway. I bought one in chinatown a week ago with the purpose of saving a turtle's life, save it from a horrible death it would probably encounter. Some people may agree with me and disagree with me, but I think no matter where you get one, as long as you're going to treat it properly, you're doing a good thing, but hey thats just me.

i dont get it..i was thinking by going to chinatown and buying the turtles, i would be saving a life. they are going to die anyway in chinatown...so whether i get one there or not makes no difference at all. by buying from them, i think i am resolving the problem.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it. I believe my niece bought my three kids in Chinatown, NY also. Cruel as it may seem, the turts that make it to Chinatown have been "scraped off the top" of the millions that are legally shipped out to the far east for food....the shipping conditions are appalling, and if it were a cat or dog (or other popular pet) it would be stopped immediately. Turts are considered as no less than seafood when shipped as an export.....in fact they are raised in Louisiana for that purpose alone (no offense to people living there, but I consider LA a third world country and I frankly don't care what they think of me, so don't bother responding to this post). Anyways, I sometimes think about where my three little ones would have ended up if my dumb but lovable niece didn't buy them from some nitwit Chinese dude posing as a pet shop owner......

I disagree. You are adding to the problem. ME, myself..i find it hard to walk away from those buckets full of dieing RES or crappy pet stores that have a couple of adult sliders inside a 10 gallon, but it has to be done. We cant save them all. By buying from those people you are stuffing money down their pants, those 10$ go a long way you know. Our goal is to stop unknowledgeable people like the ones in china town from selling them..i dont see how we can achieve that with people buying from them.

You have a good heart, and i used to think the same as you - but I woke up..

Florida is a whole nuther story...most turts, and other reptiles are wild caught (totally illegal) then sold at roadside stands or other type tourist stops. Don't blame the toothless ones selling them, blame the state government for allowing it to occur....

ive been asking around for baby DBT sales...they're pretty costly, around 250 total (shipping included)...is that the goign price, or am i getting jipped?

It's probably about right...they are rare and relatively expensive to raise to legal size.
