General Care Discussion :: Restless Adult Male RES

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Okay, I checked many of the previous postings for "restless" turts and there all about females wanting to lay eggs.

Well, Mr.T is all MAN. Often, I peek out my sliding glass door and he's climbing the walls of his pond... This started maybe 2 months ago. When I go out to visit him he climbs up onto his basking area and try's to climb out of the pond, Like literally reaches out towards me. I feel like it's much more than just begging.

I let him get out a couple times a week to climb around the yard, but he's a dare devil and ends up climbing on everything and jumping off. A few days ago he scraped his shell and had a tiny amount of bleeding, So I had to lay off on the playtime.

I'm wondering if he's twitterpated. It is spring. Please let me know what you think... Should I get him a mate? Does he just need a friend... I worry that he might get territorial with a new RES in the mix.

Spot went through a spell of really noticable activity recently. He's calming down now. I thought his hormones might be rising with the spring. I finally started taking him outside for walks on a daily basis so he could burn off some of that energy. I think some of the other people felt their turtles were going through the same thing.

I thought it was just mine acting like that! Billy has been acting differently too. He seems very hyper and restless. When I put my finger up to the glass, he's more attentive to it and keeps fluttering his nails, which he rarely did before. It must be because of spring because I've noticed a pretty big change in behavior.

It definitely could be due to the change in the seasons and warmer weather coming. My RES's appetite has also increased.
