General Care Discussion :: Help me find a UVB light please!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:38 pm   Help me find a UVB light please!

well I've been to petco about 5 times now, and each time I have come back with a ligh tonly to find out that it DOESNT HAVE UVB!!!!
The first time I thought it did because it was really expensive, then I got antoehr one that said FULL SPECTRUM of light, turns out UVB is not included in that spectrum. Then I found a bulb that said UVB on the packaging, only to find out that it said "Can be used with Zoo Med's REptisun 5.0 UVB floursescent lamp". So I am really pissed off right now, I don't think that my petco has any uvb , lamps except ones that are $40, and I don't want to spend that much

So basically, could someone please direct me to a good, cheap UVB lamp? I need it to be able to fit a regular lamp fixture, and preferably, I would like it to be from petco ( I have petco credit and a store near me)
Thanks for the help in advance

Unfortunately, the only true uvb bulb you're going to find at petco is the 40 dollar one. You want the reptisun 5.0. If you're willing to order online, you can get it at reptiledirect.com for 20, but otherwise you've just got to suck it up and shell out the bucks. Sadly it's an expensive but necessary part of turtle care.

Yeah I agree with starchick...if you want it from petco, it's gotta be the 40$ one's, unless you order online, which you can get the reptisun 5.0 for 20$ (STAY AWAY FROM THE REPTISUN 10.0'S), or you can get a Reptiglo 5.0 for like 15$ or so off of www.reptilesupply.com UVB lights can be expensive, but they are worth it, your turtle needs it...and if you think 40$ is a lot, well..then a 100$ vet visit for your turtle is going to kill you - it's the cost of keeping these little guys thriving, be prepared to spend hundreds..

Really? I had wondered about it. With my turtles I tend to be paranoid, so I'm always afraid there's something wrong with something so much cheaper than similar products. But you say it performs well?

Well i've been using it for almost 2 in a half months already. And I have never had any eye problems with my turtles like I did with the reptisuns, the price is VERY nice, though the UVB output isnt nearly as powerful as the reptisuns, it's not low, and if you wish to go higher, they have a 10.0 version too (i think 5% UVB is plenty enough for aquatics), and exo terra is a very reputable company.

Oh, and ever since I started using the reptiglo's, my turtles have been basking a lot more. My male spends a good 3 - 4 hours on his dock every morning and another hour or two sometime later (sometimes more), and my female spends a good 1 - 2 hours in the afternoon (sometimes more), and then usually basks for the final 3 hours before the lights go off..before that they only basked for about 30 minutes a day, sometimes an hour or two, but very rarely.

Really? That's unusual, they don't carry them on the website and my store has only ever had the long tubes.
