So, i have a pond in my backyard that i am going to be keeping my 3 new little turtles in. First of all, should they be able to get all the way out of the pond and onto real land? or is a rock in the water sufficient for them to get out of the water on? And second, if they DO need to be able to get on dry land, how big of a fence do i need to make for them? i was just thinking of maybe stacking up like 2 landscaping blocks around an area around my pond. would that be good enough to keep them in you think?

Thanks for any input you guys have! :o

well if you dont plan on them getting out they still will climb out and i would recomend getting like chicken wire to fence it off a bit but do this before putting them in because some things do go wrong like my 2 res escaped 2day from my pond while i was going to go get some wire to fence it off :'(

The people on this forum said that turtles can dig surprisingly well, so you will have to make sure the fence goes a ways underground. Chicken wire, or you can get more decorative types of edging stuff at home depot. Like little mini white picked fence looking stuff, might be more visually pleasing than chicken wire.

I think they can climb chickenwire, esp if they looking for somewhere to nest, they become escape artists. mine tried but i put it on an angle so it slopes in toward the pond and not straight up. I have found nice riverrocks to tuck the wire under so they cant dig out.
I left about a metre on one side of the pond for them to cruise around on and they do use that space but i dont know if its necessary, they follow the sun around the pond.
Have fun and enjoy sitting by yr pond with yr babies, we love it.

they don't need to bask on land. as long as they can get fully out of the water on that rock and get some sun, it'll be fine. I would recommend putting a fence around the pond just in case as previous poster have stated, turtles are great climbers.

The only reason your turts would need to be on land is if they are female and need to lay eggs. That's it though.

Yea a fence wont work you need like a wooden border that goes partly in the ground and is tall enough that they cant reach the top. Ive even seen a picture of a turtle that wedged its way in the corner of wood and made its way up the corner.

That what i use to keep my turtles in their nesting area

You can see that wood is pretty darn high compared to that 6inch painted
