Is your tank one of those turtle tanks with the hole in the side? If so, raise the wataer as high as you can and when you upgrade, get a regular tank so that you can fill the tank up MUCH more. That tank won't last you as long as a regular 20 gallon would because of the lack of swimming space as your turtle grows. Is your light both UVA/UVB?

Really cute turtle and some good pictures .. :)

Post Posted: Fri Feb 10, 2006 12:23 am   about the water level in the tank

I forgot to address that my turtle has early signs of MBD :(, which I was suggested by a few people that it's probably not a good idea for him to swim as much. I just can't wait for my turtle to get better so he can swim all he wants :) Also, isn't amount of water level suppose to be their shell length? sorry but this is the first time I got a tank for him, so I'm still new to this :( really appreciate your comments :)

If he swims around a lot now, he would probably be okay with more water. You might want to ask your vet.

I love your pics. Especially the close ups.

Normally you'd fill the tank as high as you can.. the more water the better. I know there are many sites/pet store people etc. that will tell you to fill the tank 1.5 times the length of the turtles shell which is probably the bare minimum of water for an aquatic turtle, but if you look at their natural habitat they swim in water much deeper than that.. in lakes/ponds etc.

Sorry for not remembering about the MBD.. there's a lot of people to keep track of .. :) Why does your vet seem to think your turtle has this again?

thank you all for the comments :)
I filled the tank with more water now and he really enjoys swimming a lot. Except sometimes I feel bad to watch him having to stand on his tiny toenails and stretch his neck as long as he could to try to get some air above the water :D I recently broke my UVB lamp by mishandling(I only used it for 5 days), so I'm getting a new one soon. I know all of you know about this, but never try to handle the bulb when it's still warm or hot, it's very fragile :(

I suggest you place some fake plants of different heights in there. He really needs some place to rest on while in the water. You can even find some to suction to the side of the tank (made for terrariums) or make some yourself the suction (this is what I did) and place right under the water level. He will then rest on the plants when needing to come up for air. :)

actually, my turtle's favorite spot now is my 'fluval 1" under water filter, he sits on it very often whenever he wants rest (or on the dock when there's UVA light), several time I found my turtle sleeps on top of the filter with just the nose sticking out of the water, so cute :))
I'm planning to get some fake plant soon, it will also make my acquarium look nicer too

The tank looks fine just ogt a couple suggestions, fill that sucker the highest the basking thingy will float.
Get a screentop, a UVB strip light on top of it. Then lay the basking bulb on top as well, and he's set
Later on though you will need at minimum 100g tank if it's a boy and you wont know for a while, when he's 3.5-4" long(shell end to end, no curve)

As for those photos, you take fantastic shots of him!

Hello, I finally got some pictures of new tank setup :)

*I put a pretty wallpaper in the background so now it looks much better than the white wall behind, also a fake plant for him to hide. He still likes to sleep on top of the fluval 1 filter though :p
*my new UVB lamp arrived finally because I broke my old one  (since 2/27)
*water level is a lot higher now :)
*and I exchanged the defective floating dock so now pineapple should be able to bask to dry easilly.

It looks nice. :) Just checking, but how far away from Pineapple is the Reptisun? And does that Fluval 1 keep the water clean?

he's about 8~10 inches away from the UVB light :)
the fluval 1 filter only does good job on filtering out big particles in the water, that's why I have another Micro Whisper on the right hand side of the tank to filter out whatever Fluval 1 didn't clean :)

by the way, I'm just wondering, on the packaging that came with the UVB bulb, it says not to stare at the UVB light since there's radiation(which I understand why), but is it ok that turtle stare at it? since I place the light kinda side way to Pineapple....I hope it won't affect Pineapple too much :?
