Habitat - Outdoor :: Backyard Turtle pond

Tinyslider2 and I are thinking about an outdoor pond for our turts during the summer months. I found this website about a backyard turtle pond. It looks good, but I wonder about things like if it has a filtration system. Maybe you all can check it out and tell us if this is a good idea.

I think that pond looks great! (it's giving me ideas.) At the very end I noticed a place for contacting the people who made it. I'd send them an email and ask what kind of pond filter they're using for filtration (there is a pic of a pump and hosing). I'd be curious to know myself.

That seems like an older web site. What is sort of an estimate for the cost of the liner? How much are 50-ish cinderblocks and capstones/fieldstones. How much do the pumps run? Thanks.

We went to Home Depot and the heavy duty liner would cost around $150. Last I checked, the blocks were around 90 cents each. I havent checked on the filter yet.

I've read someone getting pond liner for $1 per foot... sounds about right

Hello all...

I haven't been on here for a while but I was reading this and thought I should put in my 5 cents worth. I have been looking into putting my turtle outside, and my first thought was a pond liner. But I got to think about and the turtle's sharp nails would put holes in the liners and you would have to replace it... They make plastic preformed ponds and a good sized one would problaby only costs about $150...

POnd liners come in varying thicknesses, and they are stretchy. The good liners are thick. Also, you lay a soft material under them so that they are not so easy to rip.

I went to that site and emailed them, its an older site but they do respond to emails. They said it cost about 1000 dollars to build it all. The only question they didnt answer is if their turtles get out into the yard or not. I am building a pond for my 4 RES and will submit my plans for you all to see when its done.

How funny, I just heard from him via email yesterday! We were talking about stock tanks.

I think that in such a pond, if you keep the water level about 6 inches below the rim of the pond, the turtles cannot get out.
