;) Gotcha

Well it turns out that the water isn't green. It's the basking platform. The green inside is reflecting on the water. :(

Well, that's the best possible cause for this "problem".

Unless you're cleaning out the mechanical pads, there is no reason to clean the rest of the filter. If you cleaned the bio-media too, then that probably contributed to the problem. With regard to the issue with your clear in-filter water: Unless you poured the water into a clear container afterwards, and assuming that your filter is a solid color (i.e., black or brown), then how would you even tell whether or not the water is actually clear...? I would think that even water-borne algae will still end up adopting the color of the container it's in.

The water in the filter is visible when you remove the lid. The filter is black but you would still be able to tell if the water was nasty. The basking platform is dirty but a little hard to deal with. No algae in the actual tank just inside the tank that is the basking platform. The foams and carbons along with the polishing pads had to be replaced as they were nasty.

How's the partial water change? I did a 100% water change on my 2 tanks about the same time as you did. One is very clear, the other is a bit murky. I might do another big water change soon as I don't think it's cycling.

Well the water change didn't do much but that's because the green stuff is inside his basking platform and not outside in the actual tank.

Pics of the basking platform. :) This may be more trouble than it's worth in the end but eventually I have to get him a larger tank anyway...
