General Care Discussion :: New turtle ?'s

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi, I adopted a 6" female res this morning. She has spent most of her life passed from one home to another(my pets are for life). The home I got her from did not know her age, I would like too know approximtly how old she is too ensure she has the proper diet.
The food that came with her is HBH Turtle bites and freeze dried shrimp. They fed her 2-3 shrimp a day and "lots" of the bites. That seems like too much too me... Any ideas on how much a six inch res should be eating? All I have found on feeding is per age.
The last 2 homes did not use uvb lighting just the basking light, so a uvb light and fixture are on my shopping list tomorrow.
Currently she is in my 50gal fish tank, too small I know, the arrangments too get her was to trade my 50gal for their 75gal. Once I arrived the tank they had her in is clearly a 40gal long. So I took my tank back home. I have seen the enclosers where a second level is build on top. I think that should keep her happy until I can get her a bigger encloser.

shrimp have a lot of protein in them and if you feed her too much of that she will suffer pyramiding. shrimp would be a great monthly treat though :]
and as far as pellets go you should feed her as much as what would fit in her head if it was hollow.
you should also offer her a variety of veggies.

check out the feeding & nutrition part of the forum.
you should find just about everything you need on there and on the main site.

Mazuri and Reptomin are great brands as far as pellets are conserned. You should start tryng to introduce veggies on a daily basis. That should help to counteract the fact that all it has had is protein. Feed pellets every other day like Daniel said. The main site has tons of information about nutrition and enclosures, so start your research there.

When in doubt, feed less. Check out the "feeding list" sticky http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11684

It has a lot of great ideas!
