It could just be a bit of algae, if you look closely are they actually very very dark green? Other than that I have no idea! Can you post a pic?

Pics would help. It's very hard to say without seeing it whether there's a problem with a turtle's shell or not - there are just too many possibilities.

Are the black spots soft? How long has he had them?

Posting a pic of the shell dry would be helpful...

That looks like it could be an injury that's developing into shell rot (your turtle has a pretty shell otherwise). Something looks like it could be starting on the scute opposite the lower one as well. Are the areas soft to the touch at all and do you smell anything if you sniff them? There's info shell rot as well as other shell problems here: www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medshell.htm

Then shell rot is involved. Take a look at that link for treatment. If you do treat it and it doesn't improve, have it seen by a vet (you'd need to see one for some of the products you'd use). Or, you could just take him in for treatment.

Please get it looked at as soon as possible. An odor is not a good sign at all and since he is still a hatchling, the situation can quickly become worse.

Please make sure he has the appropriate setup (calcium, clean water, basking, UVB, etc) and check this list: www.redearslider.com/startup.html
