General Care Discussion :: Shedding every two days

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

How often are they supposed to shed their skin? My turtle, every time I change the water, which is every 2 days (and I wipe it down with warm water), when I put it in the clean water, I see plastic-like looking things hanging off the skin. I know it's shedding....(right?) because it ends up in the water in about an hour or so. Is this normal? If not, this has been going on forever!
Water temp: 75-80

Read through the Skin Shedding section on this- http://redearslider.com/physical_conditions.html

Are any of the symptoms in there happening to your turtle?

It would be nice to have a more consistent water temp---if it's high 70's or 80F for any length of time, it may be too warm for your larger turtle (I can't remember, but I'm assuming the hatchling is in a separate set-up).

Normal skin shedding shouldn't be continuous and it shouldn't be that noticeable, even in the water.

larqw -- The scutes do not come off the carapace at one time. They come off a few at a time making room for the new larger ones as they grow.

Thank you all!
Yes, the hatching is in a separate set-up. I haven't seen any scutes shed in some time now, actually, just the skin.
