so from what ive read on this website i feel like i committed animal cruelty!!!! I have 2 baby res and they are both 2 inches n i have them in a 5-6 gallon tank!!! i actually thought that was big enough for them but i was wrong! Why do they need soo much space if they are soo tiny? Wat size should i upgrade to if i plan to keep them in there for another yr or two and is it really that horrible to keep them in their tank until i can buy theyre new one

Im glad you found this site but sorry you didnt buy a turtle book before the turtle I could guess too many people get turtles and never treat them right.
so the concern you portray means you at least care


captive turtles need alot of room to swim. They should be In about a 40-50 gallon right now. They will need a bigger tank later.,The rule is 10 gallons per inch. 5-6 gallon isnt going to be big enough for the next year. here is a 50 gallon for about 100.00

keep in mind if you cant afford to provide what your turtles need you need to give them to someone who can.

ok so you have the basking, heat lamp im assuming, a filter.

that takes up almost half the tank.

if you could buy them a rubbermaid plastic container for about 15 bucks, that would be adequate for a while.

maybe you could give a friend one of your turtles, someone who could give as much care. because having two turtles will double your budget.

wat size do i need for them to live in for another or two, i wanna get the bigger tank asap!

i didnt kno they needed such a big tank or else i would have bought it when i was working they were a present from my mom for my bday! i thought i had them pretty good since they were living in a tiny container, they do have a heater, a lamp, a dock to bask on, and a filter

Well in the first year, each of your turtles will reach about 4". So in order for the tank to last one year, you would have to have a 60gal tank. But for two years, they will probably reach 5-6". So say they are each 6" after 2 years, They would need at least 90 gallons.

Also you didn't mention you have a UVB light. A good one to get is the Exo Terra Reptiglo 5.0% 26 watt. They are readily available at Petsmart/Petco.

Now that I see a picture Im not as worried as i was before. mainly because one of my old friends had two turtles the same size in a 5 gallon with no basking area and no heater and no filter....just a tank.... i told him what he needed and hes didnt care so unfortuantly they are still in the little tank suffering. Dont freak out
because You didnt know what they needed and they were a gift. Just get them a bigger tank as soon as possible Im just glad to hear your planning on getting them a bigger tank and that you found this site! You can get a 55 gallon tank and aquarium stand for 200 dollars which isnt that bad.. Or a stock tank which is much cheaper... for the time being a rubbermaid 50 gallon storage container would be fine and you can get one of those for around 20-50 bucks. I have a 20 gallon storage container that i used when i first got my turtle it cost around 10 bucks. You could get 2 for 20, untill You have enough money for a bigger tank:)

i have a 40 w blue zoo med bulb so yea i guess i dont have a uvb 8( i do take them out in the sun sumtimes though, ill get one of those too

i really love my turtles, they are super cute and they make me smile all the time so i really wanna make it right for them
