I just bought a 5.0 UVB basking light bulb. Question.. my turtles are still very small ( 1.5 inches). Is the light too bright for their eyes or will hurt them? How close should it be? I notice that they wont fully get up on the basking are now and im wondering if its too close since they are still babies

Both bulbs may be too close. How many inches are they from the basking platform? Use a thermometer to take the temperature on the platform. It should be around 88 to 90 degrees. If it's more, you'll need to move the heat bulb further away. On the UVB bulb, what do the directions that came with the bulb say? I think usually a bulb like that should be around 12" from the basking platform but it varies from brand to brand.

What brand of UVB bulb do you have - like Repti Glo, Reptisun, etc? If it's an exo terra repti glo, what wattage is it?

I moved the UVB bulb away it is 12 inches away now and the basking temperature is around 91 degrees. The UVB bulb is a Exo Terra Reptiglo 5.0 26 watts. They still are acting like they don't want to get on the platform for whatever reason. They loved basking before I put the UVB bulb up. I don't know whats wrong!

Try turning the UVB bulb off and see if they start basking again.

I have been using a 150 watt flood light that I payed $2 for at Wal Mart. I of course have a seperate uva/uvb

My basking bulb is about 5-8 inches from the basking area, right now he doesn't have a UVB on his tank because he's in his old 10 gallon for now until I finish my 53 gallon.

Spotsmama is right, try giving them a few days without the UVB light and see if they start basking again. Their eyes might still be irritated from the light being too close.
