I went into the bait shop last night to get some earthworms for my boxie. I know that the guy is just a regular joe and has no reason to know anything about what to feed a turtle, but...

I go in, ask for the worms, he asks if I'm going fishing. I said no, I'm feeding a turtle. I asked about how the worms were kept, etc. He says "won't he just eat turtle food?" and I told him that my turt is still small and will only eat things that wiggle. He suggests FRENCH FRIES and JUBE-JUBES  I looked at him like he was crazy and he said "they'll eat fries y'know".

I'm just relieved that this guy's running a bait shop and not a pet store.

 :o  Ok, I'm sitting here just laughing and shaking my head. It's like going to a clerk at a pharmacy asking them to give you a diagnoses for your illness. Did you make it out of there with your mouth still shut, or did you have to tell him how 'wrong' he was? LOL Don't know if I could have walked out and not said some kind of comment.

He was creepy to begin with so I just said "yeah I suppose a turtle would eat fries but it can't be good for them". Seriously tho he was so creepy I left with a chill

My guess is he's like most of the redneck country boys that live around here.. they are only familiar with the wild turtles they encounter while fishing.. and yeah they'll eat anything.. including your fingers.. :D

Actually, it's not suprising at all. It's almost the same as feeding a dog a chicken bone. People think since the dog loves it, it's okay.
Or as feeding birds almost anything. Sad to say, but some people do see some (or most) animals as garbage disposals.

Are you sure he wasn't talking about fish fry? I'm an avid fisherman and that's a common term for a type of baby fish!! I wouldn't think a fisherman would tell you french fries after you said your turt likes things that move

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about that. Though every time I hear "Fry", I think about Futurama.

he doesn't represent all fisherman. He is a whacko if he really did say french fries....I would stay away from him and his worms.

it's the only place around here that even sells earthworms so i'm stuck with it. When he said jube-jubes, i just looked at him and he said "y'know, those little candies. You can put them on a string and wiggle it"
