General Care Discussion :: Just got a neglected turtle. *UPDATE ON PAGE 2

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Sep 29, 2008 5:09 pm   Just got a neglected turtle. *UPDATE ON PAGE 2

My daughter found a turtle to good home on kijiji....so we picked it up.
Honestly never had one before, so learning as we go, and doing oodles of research. So first, to answer the questions.

How big is your turtle? 4" across
How long have you had it? 3 days

What is the water temperature? 80degrees
Did you use a thermometer? in water thermometer
Are you using a water heater? no
How much water is in there? 6 inches
Are you using a water conditioner? yes
Are you using any filtration? yes

What is the basking temperature? 95-100 degrees
Is there a basking light? yes
Is there a basking platform that is easy to climb on? yes
What kind is it or what is it made out of? "turtle dock' suctions to sides
Is there a UVB light? yes

What have you been trying to feed it? reptobites, feeder fish, turtle bone, green leafs
When was the last time your turtle ate? this morning

How big is the tank/pond/enclosure? right now 10 gallons, as we were told it was a small turtle we were picking up. Should be in a 60 gallon tank within a week or two.
Is the tank near a window? yes
Is the tank in a room with a lot of activity? not a lot, but some

Have you read the Basic Care section? yes
Have you searched the forums for similar situations? yes

Is there any other unusual activity/symptoms? no

Alright, so we just picked up this turtle 3 days ago, from someone that admittedly was not taking care of it. There was no basking lamp, filter, nothing but a cement block. And dogs that were pushing it around in its rubber made tote. They also never told us that the plastron was sore.

Needless to say. We are doing our best to get the little one better, and avoid a hefty vet bill if at all possible. So, what we have done so far. Got the temps to a point that the turtle climbs to the basking dock on its own, and sits there for hours....lol, then jumps in the water to cool off.
The last two days since I've done some reading, we have been keeping him drydocked, giving him a sulfa dip bath, putting antibiotic ointment on, and then letting him swim for a bit, in fresh clean water. (There is also no foul smell coming from his plastron at all.) Oh, and he has a really big sore on the top of his head, apparently from the dogs...not entirely sure. And there are some ridges on his shell.

So here, are some pics, please let me know if what I'm doing is right.

And if you can, am I right that our little addition is a boy?

Those pics are kinda small so it's hard to tell, but Pickle doesn't look too bad to me. Water temps seem a bit high for a turt that size. 76F would probably be more comfortable. If Pickle is basking for long periods under 95-100 deg. temps then let that be....
I cant tell from the pic (cant make out the tail) but from what I can see of the nails, I'd say Pickle's a boy.
He's lucky you found him...nice save!

There, upsized the pics. Hopefully easier to see. Just checked his basking temp right now, and its 95 and he's basking in it at the moment.

That plastron looks pretty bad to me. My turtle had those exact sores when I got her only hers were smaller. I put tricide solution on them and let it just sit for 30 minutes so the tricide would soak into the shell. Within a week it was completely cleared up. Honestly, you should take it to a vet to get a diagnosis... I can't tell what kind of sore is on the head. I don't know how expensive turtle vets normally are but mine only charges me $20 for an office call and then however much the meds cost. Any exams are included in my office call but I don't know if thats the standard.

The plastron does look like it has some shell rot. Some pics here: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/medshell.htm

They have treatment suggestions, though if there is no improvement then veterinary care would be necessary.

For the sore on his head, clean it gently with a q tip moistened with clean water then apply some antiseptic ointment with another clean q tip. Keep him out of the water for awhile to allow the ointment to set. Repeat this several times a day.

Poor baby. You're very kind to take him in a give him some care.

Hi all, just thought I would let you all know that Pickle seems to be responding well to the treatment we are giving him.
The white area on the top of his head is nearly gone. His plastron is not as pink, and looks to be clearning up. I tried to take some pictures tonite, but they aren't as clear due to the night lighting...lol. No sun in the windows.
Let me know what you all think.

Here, his shell has lost all the white spots.
Image

His tummy not as rough looking.

The spot where that horrid white sore was on his head.

And he loves loves loves to get rubbed under his neck, and on his nose. But his neck the most. You simply touch under his chin, and he sticks his neck out to get rubbed...lol. Its so cute. And he closes his eyes when you rub the top of his head...

As well, we are moving him to a 33 gallon tank this weekend. We've only had him a week, and already he's gone from his shack to basic house...lol...now the bungalow.....then the mansion...lol (Wish I was that lucky.)

What an affectionate turtle! And a lucky one to have found you.

He has a beautiful pattern on his carapace, doesn't he. His poor plastron still looks pretty sore. Hopefully it will heal all up soon.

Looks good Pickle! Please keep an eye on any pits and scarred areas. Those areas are more prone to re-infection. You might even want to do a precautionary cleaning every once in awhile.
