Other Turtle Discussion :: Petland is starting to worry me

So I go in there today as I have only three snails left I want to keep two of them for mating puposes. I walk in and they have golden mystery snails on sale for 88 cents. I ask for three to replace the three that are gone aka Michelangelo ate. The guy looks at me and goes, oh you can't feed those to turtles, plus they never move. I felt like handing him a sign that said HI I'M STUPID! I told him my turtle eats them just fine and they are fine for him and also the mystery snails aren't moving because you have them under a bright UV light. Mystery snails are basically apple snails and are active in the dark/night. So therefore they are not going to move!! Plus they had so many in there they were stacked on top of each other, therefore they can't move anyways!

But tomorrow apparently they are getting in 1,000 ghost shrimp and again the guy was like you feed those to your turtle!? No, I just said that to see how you'd react..UH DUH!

After explaining that one I walked around to their turtle food section as I wanted to compare some stuff and I saw this dog. It had no food and I think the only water it had was in something that you would put in a mouse cage, those little bottles with the metal "straw" and I wanted to get the dog out of there so bad. It was just laying there hardly moving and when it saw me it wouldn't break eye contact. So finally I knelt down next to the glass and it got up and just laid it's head right next to my hand on the glass. I about cried. I asked if the dog was sick and the guy said no it just was too big to be put up for sale right now. So it was put into the adoption pen.

When I go back tomorrow to get the ghost shrimp........there might be a dog in the truck with me.......I'd bet my parents would be thrilled with that, but this dog was just wanting someone to be with it so bad and I loved how it wouldn't break eye contact with me, as I want to train a dog for either a police k-9 unit, naroctics dog, or a cadaver dog, and this one so far from just the eye contact and the attention has the ability to become one. So we'll see.

I'm just really disappointed and worried in how petland is starting to get.

Over here (SoCal) PetLand is about non-existant. Thank goodness.

I never seen a PetLand that was good. Since when do pups drink from giant rodent bottles?

I hope you get that dog, he was telling you to get him out of there. If you dont train him for one of those jobs, you could give him a nice home.

It's funny that I keep hearing all this negativity about Petland. The one in my area is the best pet store around. I go there because they take great care of their animals...I wonder what's up with them in the states

I know that dog was wanting me to get him out of there and I want to so badly. Thing is I have no where to really put him and I don't think having this big dog staying in the house at the moment is on my parents' happy list. But if I do get it, I'll run up to the amish and get a good dog house for it. See in the spring I'm supposed to get a dog when the Amish come down to build a new barn and in this new barn I'm designing an indoor/outdoor run/kennel for a dog. Well no barn yet, no place for the dog. Though if this one isn't trainable for the police stuff it could be the parents' dog. But from the looks of this dog it looked like a german retriever mix. It had the face of a german but the body and hair of a retriever so it does have potential.

The way chains like that are run depends on the manager/staff. Good mangers and staff make a good store. A store name doesn't make a place good or bad.... THere's a Noah's Pet Ark in a mall here that is HORRIBLE (They are the ones I reported to the SPCA--still haven't heard anything back, but they're not selling res anymore.) But, another noah's pet ark across town is awesome.

yeah that's true about management. I've seen both good and bad PetCos and PetSmarts....my peeve is when they get an exotic spiecies of turtle and they're #1 not allowed to make a proper envioment because of 'marketing appearance' of the store or #2 tey dont know how to house it.

man, my first job is going to be working at a pet store, cause i totally hate the way they are mis-treating their animals, and with you all to help, theres nothing to loose

If you get the dog and it loves to play ball. I mean loves to play ball to the point that it would rather play ball than to eat and he/she will have to use its nose. Act like your going to throw the ball one way but throw it the other way in to the weeds or woods. Then the dog has to use it nose to find it. Then it might be able to be trained for a Narcotics dog. But a "pro" would have to finish the training.

the petland by my house isnt too bad. they dont sell turtles, dogs, or cats...only fish, reptiles (chameleons and geckos mostly) and small birds..its mostly just a pet supply store...but then again i have about 6 pet stores within a 5 minute drive from my house..petland, petco, petsmart,some pet store in the mall and a small pet discount pet supply store. be careful buying dogs from pet stores...they are usually from puppy mills and dont last that long, have health problems and behavior problems because they breed them too quickly and inbreed them too much. even though i feel bad for them i'd rather rescue a dog from a pound. i have a 14 yr old daschound(weiner dog) who we got from a well known breeder...honestly and impartially he is the sweetest, nicest, healthiest (knock on wood) dog i have ever had the pleasure to come in contact with.
