Ok I go into petland today and I wanted some fish to put in with Michelangelo, something bright and pretty. I go in there and they have a male betta in with a female betta and he's just beating them to death. I thought about getting the male to get him out of there as he was gold and black, but when he turned his right side had three bright white spots. I said no way, I'm not getting him as I fear he has a disease.

But I noticed an albino female was hiding in the corner of the tank. So I said give me her.

I'm not putting her in with Michelangelo and the other fish just yet. My mom is taking her home tonight (I'm at her work right now) and she is going to put her in a separate tank with no one else and we are keeping everything that could contaminate the other tank away from her.

How long should I quarantine her? I plan on keeping her in there for a week and observing her. I don't know if she is sick or not but she was getting beat up, but she looks alright from what I've observed. Her fins are a very very pale blue. Since she is white she'll be hard to spot any disease, any suggestions?

I was just horrified that Petland put a male in with a female betta and was letting him attack them like that. (also there were three dead females in the tank from him attacking them) and also keeping a sick betta in there as well. I noticed the other male bettas that were kept in separate bowls, most of them were dead from Ick as they looked like someone shook snow all over them.

I just need some ideas to save her. I don't want her to die, but at least I got her out of there and she should be better off.

take pictures of the place, report them, they'll get a good lecture to remove the dead ones and keep the males from the females, an treat them with better care

I applaud you for trying to save that fish but I have one concern. Might she suffer an even worse fate when put in with your turtle? I'd suggest getting a betta bowl or a small tank and just keeping her by herself because there's a really really good chance that mikey will eat her eventually.

She's in a betta death bowl as that is all I have for now, but she's so tiny it's not really that bad.

As of this moment I'm not worried about putting her in with Michelangelo, he's not a fish guy. He's only eaten one guppy and I'm assuming that he did as I cannot find my red guppy at all. But all the other guppies, the sword tail, the minnow, and the pleco he has not touched. And those guppies have been in there for over a year. And I bought two other fish today besides my betta and he hasn't touched them. So honestly I am not worried about her getting eaten. There are much smaller fish in the tank compared to her and she is a little bit too big for him.

She will be in the betta bowl for a week as I don't see any obvious signs she's sick. During this week I will also watch Michelangelo to see if he attacks any of the fish. If he doesn't then I'm going to go ahead and put her in and see how it goes. If I notice she is getting attacked she will get tank out of the tank and put into something else where she will be alone.

As for what to do about Petland. I am considering the photos or calling someone. I've noticed that with other tanks fish will be dead or crammed into the tank because they want to get as many in as possible and this place is apparently getting turtles and I can't even start to think of what that might look like. Plus I don't think they even fed the one fish I bought because when he went to go get him every single fish in that tank came up to the top and I mean every single fish because they were wanting food. So I wonder if they are even feeding them regularly (he got fed as soon as I got home)

One thing you can do is not shop there anymore. You might not have a choice about that, but at the very least don't buy any animals from them.
Talk to the manager. Take some pictures. Report them.

Worst part is, they have ghost shrimp and guppies cheap compared to everyone else, so I go there for those. Plus they were the only ones to have female bettas.

I may switch..I just hate paying a dollar a piece for ghost shrimp at the other pet store.

The betta died today and I'm livid. I'm glad I kept her out of the tank as I do believe she had a disease (what one I'm not sure, as I don't think she had ick but her whole body is white so I can't be positive) but she didn't go easy and I'm not happy about it as I couldn't just end it for her as I have to take her back to Petland and show them to her. (which I think is dumb)

I'm not going to let them keep her so they can just toss her out into the dumpster, the poor girl wasn't living a good life there and I did my best for her here (I even moved her into the death bowl that was the turtle's so she has more swimming room and play room) and I think she realized it as she tried to eat but she just never could. I feed her flakes and I would cut up her pellets as she refused to eat the flakes and couldn't get her mouth around the regular sized betta pellets.

So we shall see what Petland does today, all I have to say is..if they don't give me my money back, they're going to see my evil side come out really fast. I know they are going to offer me another betta but I don't want another one as I can promise that all the others in that tank are diseased as well (especially since so many were in the tank dead when I got her) I know I probably shouldn't have bought her since so many were dead and sick and the male had Ick, but I wanted to get her out of there and give her a little better life for what I could.

So I'll let you know tonight when I get back from class what Petland does, just so help me if they tick me off I'll be reporting them to everyone I know and also I'll just go to the other pet store and pay a dollar a piece for ghost shrimp, at least they don't sell diseased animals and put male bettas in with the females for no reason.

UPDATE:
Got back from Petland after giving them Snowflake. I almost got into a fight with the guy in the aquarium section. I noticed when I walked in that they had more female bettas in the betta tank and all of them were dead. I was livid and I let them know about it. They were only going to give me back 2.50 out of the 6 I spent on her. So I told them what I thought of their treatment of her and the other animals in the tank and how obviously the dead female bettas had been in there a while (their eyes had been eaten out and stuff as there are tiger fish in the tank)

So finally the guy tried to blame me for killing her and I went off big time at that point and demanded to see the manager. Manager wouldn't even see me. The guy just said, he'll give you your 6.00 back. So I go up front and the guy just slams the money down into my hand and gets huffy with me about how some people just want it all. I told him to shut it because I'm calling him in animal abuse since he but a male betta in with female bettas, whom also got a disease from the male betta, whom also were all killed because of this disease and no one bother to help the sick bettas by medicating or separating them into other bowls. I got the look from hell at that point. I told he'd be lucky if I ever shopped there again.

I may shop there when I get the 25 % off coupons so I can get the turtle UVB light cheap, but I promise I won't get any live animals off of them again. Looks like Michelangelo is going to have to get used to having less ghost shrimp in the tank since now I'm going to have to a pay a buck a piece for them.........

So if you have a Petland nearby and they act like these idiots, don't go back there. It's time to take back the system!
