Hi E, I know you ( sort of ) from the aquarium site. They are not too prompt on replies though ( where is everybody ? ).
10 gallon is a bad idea, the bigger the tank is, the easier the water quality is to maintain actually. The goldfish site I belong to ( Kokos goldfish world ) says 10 gallons per fancy, 20 gallons per comet. I have a 55 gallon with 6 and was told it was overstocked ! That site is great for advice on cycling your tank when you are ready. You have to think about what type of fish you want and the size they will beat adulthood.
Cichlids are really cool and love to dart around. They are semi-aggressive to aggressive though so can not be mixed in with community tank fish such as platies/guppies/swordfish/mollies. They also can get QUITE large so you would need to do reseach. I have a 29 gallon tropical tank also which is alot of fun - but not as much as turtles! The main thing is water quality and frequent water changes, and to go SLOW when adding fish in the beginning. I would be happy to discuss further if you get to the filling up the tank stage. Painted patience

I am an experienced fish keeper....Don't go the goldfish route. They are messy, they get disease, and they are expensive.

Instead, either go for 3 small cichlids.....OR my choice, get some neon tetras/mollys/catfish...the freshwater friendly type. They dont cause any hastle.

Don't worry about spending money on another tank.I used my old fish tank for Vien and she was fine.About the filter. My algea eater is messier than my turtle,so I would probably use both.
