Is there any way you can train a turtle? I read somewhere on this site that if the owner snaped her fingers it would come to the top. How did you do this? My turtle is three years old.

I've never tried to actually train them but my res will jump from the water and take food from my hands. I don't think you can call that talent really, just greed. My box turtle will come out from under his log in the morning and glare at me tile I spray him with water and if I stop before he wants me to he'll spin around a couple times until I start spraying him again...not sure why, and again, not sure you could call it talent

Yeah, my turtle used to eat out of my hand too...Until I used a food stick that was too short and he got my finger instead....That put a stop to that trick

I think they can be conditioned to respond to certain simuli (nothing fancy) but not trained as a dog could be. And I think a better response could be gotten if any "training" were started as a hatchling rather than as an older turtle.

I can call my turtle and she will come to me. I have had her for 16 yrs and she definitely responds to me like no other person.

I can tell you that if you have a piece of food in your hand, show it to the turtle so they can smell it, and walk away from the turtle, it will follow you.

I can't tell you exactly how I got my Sheba to start coming to me when I called her (it's been a long time!), but I just know that she does (people don't believe it until they see it!). I talk to her a lot when she is in the tank too so she hears my voice.

Time & attention spent on your turtle will bring out some very fun traits! Just work with him/her & you will see!

I'm surprised the turtle would take food out of the water, since it can't swallow with out the water.

well it doesn't actually eat out of the water, u hold it out of the water and it jumps up to get it, then it swims down to start eating!

Sheba will bite at anything I have in my hand when she is walking outside the water, but then I have her feeding bowl ready for her and just drop her in the water immediately after she takes the food from my hand.

My turtle is trained to know who will feed him! I have had a few different people in charge of feeding him when I go out of town. And he can recognize these people and will follow them around when they walk thru the room. How funny is that! Just goes to show that turtles think with their bellys.

He loves to follow me around, both in and out of his tank. When I clean out his tanks I let him walk around on the ground. He follows me around and likes to walk over my feet. LOL
