I was at the pet store tonight and saw something advertized as "waste degrader". Suppose to help keep the tank cleaner. Just wondered if anyone used it and what the results were?

I've never used a product like that. However, it's my opinion that if you have a really good filter and do the recommended cleanings that it shouldn't be necessary.

I don't think a waste degrader is necessary--it just helps break down the poop, etc. into a form you can't see, but doesn't make the water any cleaner. Water changes and maintaining filter are far more effective. How big is your tank and what kind of filter are you using?

Thanks for the responses. I have a 50 gal tank and actually using two whisper filters. Not having any problems, just thought anything that might prolong the time between cleanings might not be a bad thing. Ha.

Yes, it would be nice to find a magic bullet that would make cleaning easier/ less frequent. :) If you wanted to check on the quality of the water, you could get some testing kits (for ammonia, nitrite, nitrates) to see how healthy the water is. Water changes (full/partial) and cleanings are the best way to keep the water quality up, though.

Waste degrader is one of the best products I have ever used with my RES. I have been using these products for 3 yrs now and it really helped keep the tank MUCH cleaner (no smell at all). I always kept my RES clean, but sometimes it was a real JOB having to change the water all the time.

I highly recommend it, especially if you have a larger RES.
