I just adopted a RES not even been a week..this little guy is a attention
whore.. is that normal?? I sit next to his pond and he scratches the side
like he is trying to climb up to me.. he loves it when i talk to him and
he litterly follows my every move.. When he see's me walk in the living room it is like he is running to side of tank to see me.. with all the lack of care this little guy recieved from previous owner i guess i am quite surprised he is so friendly... are any of your turtles like this??

That's what my Zeke does...very interested in Begging, and he also fans his claws at me. I have had my Zeke for 2 weeks now...rescued him from someone who tired of him after 5 years. Anyways Zekes is getting more and more persistent. I think it is because he has now realized that I am the 'hand that feeds him' so he wants my attention. He knows now he doesn't have to wonder when his next meal will be and if it will be the right stuff....that's just what my thinking on this is.

LOL. Thats what my zeke would do too. He's always begging. But I quikly learned I can't give in to him....all the time.... ;-)

I actually divide his feedings into morning and night cause he needs to gain weight anyways.

Yeah I havent had my little res a week yet he came from someone that didnt feed him right, He was in one inch of water and he had no light..
Now he is fed on schedule has a pond to swim in and basking light.. he is loving life .. he really needs a good shed and it is pealing away slowly he will looks so much better when he sheds all the way .. poor little guy :cry:

I know how that goes...Zeke is the same way. He has already shed 5 complete scutes, with MANY more getting ready to shed...the shell underneath so far is looking good. So we are making progress.

My turtle Spot follows us around like a dog. My little nephew Jacob likes to run back and forth in front of Spot's tank. Back and forth runs little Jacob, and back and forth chases little Spot!

Aww.
I wish mine was like that. My turtle (still as of yet un-named, just Big Guy - real exciting.) absolutely freaks out when I walk into the room and tries like crazy to swim into the glass to get away making a huge path of river pebbles with his futile efforts.

Any suggestions on taming? When I bring food, he hides and won't eat unless I've been gone a good, safe while.

Have you had him long? They definitely get used to people over time. Give him awhile. For the two years we had him, Spot lived in an aquarium in our den where my husband and I spend all our time, so he had lots of exposure to people. I recall he was very shy at first. I don't know how long it was before Spot was brave enough to bask in front of us, but it was a long time. Now it's no big deal, he climbs right up on his platform in front of us. I handle him a little every day, just for a few minutes, very gently, and I think this helps him to be more trusting. I pick him up to see how his shell is doing, and sometimes let him crawl around on the ground.

I was really sorry to hear of your loss of Little Guy.

I've had him about 4 months now. But as I've been reading posts about where other people have their turt tanks, something came to mind that may have to do with his shyness.

Could be a bit of a reach, but he's in our living room where my two daughters (3 & 5) play and watch tv. Though the room is huge - like 20' x 30' a converted garage - and his tank is way back in a corner away from the main sitting/play area. And sometimes, no, make that a lot of times, the girls are loud, scream, yell, etc. But they actually ignore him since they learned a long time ago they can't take him out. Sometimes they look in on him but again he hides so what's the point? They start school next week so it will quiet down some too.

So I don't know if this has anything to do with his shyness or how well they hear. He's in the water a lot. Maybe like everything else, he'll get used to it.

The only suggestion I can think of would be to walk up to the tank very quietly- take a step stop for a second, take a step stop for a second... until you are next to the tank... Hope this helps
