Keep washing! Yes you can get salmonella from anything the turtles come in contact with including the water. Don't wash any of the turtle's stuff (tanks, filters, etc) in the kitchen. If there is salmonella present in the water, it can spread through any water that get's splashed around. It's the same as handling raw chicken. You just need to be careful about it.

Diahreah, stomach cramps. Those are the main symptoms, im sure there is more. I heard that if you keep your turtle healthy it could minimize the chance of spreading by a little bit (I dont know if its fact). Better safe than sorry though..:)

Never can be too cautious! Keep a bottle of anti-bacterial hand cleaner next to the tank as a reminder and USE IT! :) I keep a bottle next to Tobis water and it reminds me that I need to use it! And it is milder than washing allllll the time also!

Keep your turtle healthy (yes, this is a fact)---if a turtle becomes ill or stressed, the bacteria can be released from the intestines, increasing the chances you could come in contact with it through the tank water, etc. And of course wash your hands well after handling your turtle or his things.

Keep a good hand lotion handy too because with all the washing your skin will dry out and split. You probably already know that.
